WHAT IS SEKWEHA?
“Sekweha” means “for the youth”. It is a community-led initiative that started from some ideas and suggestions of youth and community members raised at workshops held in at the Multi-plex and Father R Perin School in 2008. Sekweha is about building a grass roots community response to the needs and aspirations of youth.
OUR VISION
Our vision is for a healthy, safe and sustainable community, helping children and youth to gain the knowledge, confidence and skills they need to be successful in life and make a positive contribution to their community. Youth are our future leaders!
ABOUT US
WHAT WE DO
Our goal is to invest in youth engagement and leadership development. We focus on programs and activities that will make growing up in Janvier a healthier, safer and more positive experience for children and youth. A core idea is to engage youth in identifying, planning and carrying out activities.
Sekweha has helped to leverage other investments for the children and youth of the community. Together with the Oil Sands Leadership Initiative, we have established a youth team focused on after school programming, and an in-school program called StartSmart.
We have also brought Alberta Education and Alberta Mental Health to bring in a Mental Health Capacity Building Project into the schools – Father R Perin, Dene High, and Headstart program (together, we have named this Project Hope). We are very proud of this accomplishment.
